Student Exhibits & Performances at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History

One of the biggest thrills many National History Day participants have is the opportunity to show off their work at national museums in Washington, D.C.  This year, one exhibit entry from each NHD Affiliate will be chosen by the affiliate coordinator for display at the National Museum of American History, Kenneth E. Behring Center on Wednesday, June 18 from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM.   Students, parents, teachers and the public can enjoy these educational displays all day and during the "National History Night" open house. Students should be prepared to discuss their exhibits with museum staff and visitors. Displays must remain on view until 7:30 PM. Transportation will be provided for students and for one chaperone per entry. Exhibit entries can be taken down in the Stamp Student Union Grand Ballroom in preparation on Tuesday evening during the public viewing from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.


Nominate your Performance for Presentation during National History Night!

ONE performance will be selected to present during a VIP reception at "National History Night" being held from 6:00 to 7:30 PM on Wednesday, June 18th at the National Museum of American History. This is a great opportunity to perform in Washington, D.C. in front of historians and guests of this private reception.

How to nominate your performance: 
1. Fill out the nomination form within your online contest registration.
2. Submit a copy of your process paper, bibliography and a DVD of your performance. Send materials to:

Transportation Information
Buses will take the selected students and their projects from the University of Maryland to the museum downtown. The selected exhibit students MUST ride the bus to the museum. Each ENTRY is allowed ONE chaperone to accompany them on the bus. Buses will board at 7:45 AM on Wedesday morning in front of Cole Field House. Buses will return to the museum to pick up these students and their projects at 7:45 PM, when "National History Night" is over. Other students and family members can drive separately or take the Metro downtown to visit the museum.

The bus will transport props for the one performance entry to the museum. The student(s) involved with this performance are not required to ride the bus downtown Wednesday morning, but they must be at the museum by 5:00PM to prepare for their performance.


Selection of an entry does not in any way affect the evaluation of the entry by NHD judges during the national contest.
