National History Day
Student Publishing Contest

The winning entry will be published in the 2015 National History Day Theme Book.

Finalists will have their essays published on the NHD web site.

Eligibility: Entrants must be completing their senior year in high school with an intent to graduate in the spring of 2014. Entrants must have been past participants of the National History Day contest (at any level).

Instructions: The 2015 NHD theme is Leadership and Legacy in History. In 1000 to 1500 words, help other students understand the theme. What is the meaning of leadership? What is the meaning of legacy? What are some examples and applications that you have seen across your study of history?

Please note the following guidelines as you begin to write:
  • Your final product should be somewhere between 1000 and 1500 words.
  • Please submit your essay in a Word document (.docx or .doc)
  • Please scan and email your entry form as a PDF to or mail a hard copy to:

  • All essays (if accepted for publication in the theme book on the NHD web site) are subject to editing
