Research Resources

  • Academic Libraries in Wisconsin: Lists major libraries in the state.
  • Area Research Centers: Located in 13 cities throughout the state, these library/archive centers house collections related to their geographic location. However, collections can be transferred to any ARC location. 
  • BadgerLink: Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction website featuring search capabilities for online databases and library catalogs. This is free for Wisconsin students. Especially useful portions of Badgerlink include:
    • NewspaperArchive: world’s largest newspaper database, searches millions from the 1700’s to present. 
    • EBSCO: Searches numerous topic-focused databases of various journals and printed publications.
  • Google Books: The full text of more than seven million books from libraries all over the world, and every word is searchable. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a partner in this project, meaning many resources are now available digitally.
  • La Crosse History Unbound: Full text, digitized primary and secondary material relating to the La Crosse area.  
  • National Archives Great Lakes Region: Historical records from 1800, including information from 85 Federal courts and agencies.
  • Online Collections from the Wisconsin Historical Society: Descriptions and links to the continually growing online collections of the Wisconsin Historical Society. This includes Wisconsin Historical Images, Wisconsin Historical Collections, Wisconsin Local History and Biography Articles, the Wisconsin Electronic Reader and much more.
  • Turning Points in Wisconsin History: More than 1,000 documents separated based on major time periods in Wisconsin history.
  • University of Wisconsin Digital Collections: The University of Wisconsin also has a large and ever growing site full of digital collections on a variety of state, national, and international topics. 
  • Wisconsin Heritage Online: Online research sources about Wisconsin history owned by libraries, archives, and museums across the state.
  • Wisconsin Magazine of History: If you are researching a topic in state history, the complete archives of the Wisconsin Magazine of History is a must see!
