When is National History Day?

Motivating Students

The National History Day program is open to all students in grades 6-12. All types of students participate in NHD--public, private, parochial, and home-school students; urban and rural students; academically gifted and average students, and students with special needs.

"It has been more than ten years since I was a participant in National History Day, but not a day has gone by in that decade that I have not used the skills that I just listed, which I first learned from National History Day. By participating in National History Day, each student learns skills and develops abilities that will allow you to excel the rest of your life. They learn to do original research that would intimidate most graduate students in any discipline. They learn how do draw unique conclusions from a large body of information and then present and defend those findings to others. They learn to express themselves both orally and in writing and with the added real world pressure of brevity."

Jon Gillum, former NHD participant who is now an attorney at Locke Liddell & Sapp LLP in Austin, Texas
